SOCAN today
SOCAN continues to fight for the rights of music creators
and publishers. We are working to lobby the Canadian government to regulate
the Internet in the same way every other means of distribution and broadcast
is regulated. We are establishing a leadership role for the future with
our members, with our customers and with society.
SOCAN has offices across Canada to serve our members and music users, with
field representatives who visit customers in every part of the country.
We operate under a Board
of Directors consisting of 18 members. Nine members are composers, lyricists
or songwriters and nine members are music publishers. The Board is elected
by a vote of all earning members every three years.
The SOCAN licensing department is responsible for collecting the licence
fees from music users across Canada, for interacting with similar societies
in other countries and for maintaining all records and files of music users.
Most of all, SOCAN is a member-based organization, existing for and working
on behalf of our members and customers.
