SOCAN is the Canadian copyright collective that
administers the performing rights of more than 80,000 composer, author
and publisher members, and hundreds of thousands of members of our
affiliated performing rights organizations (PROs) worldwide, by licensing
the use of their music in Canada. We collect licence fees on their
behalf for the communication and public performance of their
copyright-protected music and distribute royalties to them.
Our affiliate PROs
around the world also administer the right to communicate and
publicly perform copyright-protected music. SOCAN distributes royalties
to our members and affiliates based on the distribution
rules approved by our Board
of Directors.
SOCAN does not copyright the
works of creators and publishers. For more information, please visit
our introduction
to copyright, or our brief review
of copyright law. To copyright your music, please visit the
copyright
section of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO)
or the Songwriters Association of Canada's song
vault.
