SOCAN collects licence fees from those who perform or authorize the performance of music. If you are a SOCAN member, we pay you royalties based on the distribution rules approved by SOCANs Board of Directors.

It's simple. As a copyright collective, we can administer the performing
rights for Canadian composers, lyricists, songwriters
and publishers more effectively and efficiently than they can individually.
By being a SOCAN member, youre helping to promote and protect the interests of all Canadian music creators. One of the ways we demonstrate the viability of the Canadian music industry is through the revenue it brings into the country.
We have reciprocal agreements with performing rights organizations in most other countries. Our strength comes from being a collective. By joining SOCAN, you become part of a network receiving royalties via licence fees we collect for a variety of music uses throughout the world. It would be extremely difficult and time-consuming for you to try to license all the performances of your works on your own.
Of course, we cant pay you royalties if youre not a member.
